Led Kaapana’s mastery of stringed instruments, particularly slack key guitar, and his extraordinary baritone and leo ki`eki`e (falsetto) voices, have made him a musical legend. He has been thrilling audiences for more than 40 years. With easy-going style and kolohe (rascal) charm, he has built a loyal corps of Led Heads from Brussels to his birthplace on the Big Island of Hawaii. Recognition by his peers earned Led 4 Grammy nominations in his own right and 2 wins on slack key compilations.

Led is one of the foremost slack key guitar players in the history of Hawaiian music, an acknowledged master. His recording career began in 1972 with the award winning family trio Hui Ohana, featuring Led (Ledward) with his twin brother Nedward and cousin Dennis Pavao. Following that group he formed another trio, I Kona, and continued to capture Na Hoku Hanohano awards. Next Led embarked on a career as a solo artist, a career that brought him even more No Hoku awards and a featured role in three Grammy-winning recordings.

Kanikapila is the Hawaiian term for a jam session, and kanikapila-style music is a common part of parties and get-togethers in Hawai’i or wherever island folks gather. Fran Guidry began playing with Led in true kanikapila style, jamming in backyards, garages, and living rooms whenever they got together in Hawai’i or California. From the beginning Fran’s goal was to complement and support Led’s playing and over the years of listening, learning, and playing he found his way to that goal.

Rather than a conventional rhythm and lead sound, Fran and Led deliver fingerstyle duets with the two guitars dancing around each other in spontaneous harmony, playing in the moment and from the heart. It’s a sweet and relaxing sound that brings you the true feeling of Hawaiian slack key guitar, kanikapila style.
